Reminders
School lunches
Please don't forget to place your child's order for lunch through ParentPay by 8:00 am on the day.
Starting Nursery in September
If your child was born between 1st September 2021 and 31st August 2022, they can join Fern Hill Nursery in September 2025. Applications for a place are made directly to the school using the online form. The closing date for applications is Friday 7th March 2025.
The NHS provides useful guidance on common childhood illnesses and how to manage them, including when you should keep your child at home. Please note their advice that children with diarrhoea or vomiting should stay away from school until they have not been sick or had diarrhoea for at least two days (48 hours). This is also our school policy. If your child is absent because of illness, please remember to let us know by email or phone by 8:30 am on each day of their absence. Thank you.
Year group weekly news is published every Friday afternoon on the Home Learning Google Classroom. You will also find this half-term's Home Learning Grids on the Classroom. All the work should be completed in time for our next Home Learning Showcase Day on Friday 13th December.
Safety on site
Please do not ride scooters or bikes anywhere on the school site for safety reasons. This includes the car park and pedestrian area running between Fern Hill and The Kingston Academy. Adults and children should dismount before entering the site at the Richmond Road entrance.
Reading for Pleasure Parent Workshop
On Tuesday 4th February, Miss Bennett, our Reading subject lead, and Ms Rouillard, our School Librarian, will be hosting a parent workshop on Reading for Pleasure. The workshop will be held at school from 9:00 to 9:45 am and will focus on the benefits of reading for pleasure and how you can support this for your child at home.
Reading for pleasure opens up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. It also improves children’s well-being and empathy, helping them to understand their own identity, and giving them an insight into the world and the views of others.
We hope you will join us! If you would like to attend, please let us know by completing this linked form.
NSPCC Number Day
Next Friday 7th February, we will be showing our support for the NSPCC and joining thousands of schools across the UK to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their national Number Day. We’ll be exploring how maths is all around us and thinking about how maths might feature in our future jobs and careers, whether it’s being a baker, an athlete or an artist!
Alongside some exciting and challenging activities in maths lessons, we’ll also be taking part in the Times Tables Rock Stars national competition. The competition runs from 7:30 am until 7:30 pm and every correct answer that a pupil gives, in any game type, during this time will contribute to their class and our school score. Please be aware that there is a 60-minute limit on playtime per player.
Children and staff are invited to Dress up for Digits on the day by wearing an item of clothing with a number on it - football shirts are welcome! This is not a mufti day, so children should wear their school uniform as normal, but they may replace their school jumper or cardigan with a maths-themed top.
We would love to raise funds to support the amazing work of the NSPCC and the vital services they provide, such as Childline. If you would like to donate, please do so directly to the charity here.
Farrah Riaz Author Visit to KS1
Farrah Riaz, author of 'The Twirly Wiggly Dance' visited our KS1 pupils on Tuesday. She read her charming and colourful picture book to us, we did a true and false quiz, and then we did some twirly wiggly dances of our own! Farrah also visited each Year 1 class for a workshop and signed some books for our pupils. 'The Twirly Wiggly Dance' is available in the school library and all the KS1 classrooms.
Thank you to everyone who came along to our Inclusion Coffee Morning this week - we were delighted to see so many of you and hope you found the information on emotional regulation useful. Our next Coffee Morning is on 28th February. If you would like to join us, please let us know via this linked form. We hope to see many of you there.
Art Competitions
Last week, we announced two different art competitions for the children to take part in, one in school and one at home.
Rotary Art Competition - 'I am alive, I have wings, I can fly'
This competition is run by the Rotary Clubs of Kingston, New Malden and Surbiton and is open to all primary school aged children in the borough. This year, the theme is 'I am alive, I have wings, I can fly'. Judging will take place before the end of the spring term and a prize giving ceremony at the Rose Theatre will follow. We are asking the children to create their artwork entries for this competition at school, although they will have the opportunity to finish the work at home if needed before the entry deadline on Monday 25th February.
Royal Academy of Arts Young Artists' Summer Show
Now in its seventh year, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is a free, open submission exhibition for students aged 4–19 studying in the UK.
Submitting artwork is completely free and is done online. Just follow this link and select Fern Hill Primary as your school. For children 12 or under, entry must be completed by a parent or guardian. Registration and submission is open until 5th March 2025.
Each student can submit one artwork and there is no theme. When you enter, you’ll be asked for an image of your child’s artwork plus some information about the piece such as title, size, and a little text about it. It will be seen by a panel of judges and arts professionals and the selected pieces will be displayed online and on-site at the Royal Academy of Arts when the exhibition opens in July.
Please let us know if you submit artwork on behalf of your child, so we can have our own exhibition at school too!
